Abacos

I can not believe that it is already mid June! We have 2 more months of charters in the Bahamas and then we are headed back to New England for hurricane season! Blue Gryphon will be doing her yard period at Front Street Shipyard, which is conveniently about a 10 minute drive from our house! It doesn’t get much better than that!

We are currently on our 4th charter of the season, and as usual, time is continuing to fly by. We just finished another wonderful owner’s trip on June 13th and picked up our new charter guests on June 16th. This is a 12 day charter in a new island chain of the Bahamas called the Abacos. It is always nice to explore new islands and expand our charter knowledge. The downside is the provisioning isn’t as plentiful in the Abacos, but we have learned to use our resources well! Jon’s new fishing habit has come to pay off!

Blue Gryphon has been keeping us busy per usual ;-). Like most females ( I can say that because I am one!) she likes to throw a fit every once in a while! Last week Blue Gryphon decided that she wanted to give Mike (our new engineer) a run for his money, and many of the systems on board decided to mal function. Of course on a yacht as big as she is, there are many systems on board, but thankfully we have two of pretty much everything for back up! Both Jon and Mike have done an amazing job troubleshooting the issues that arose, but getting parts flown into the Bahamas isn’t exactly quick and easy!

We are still currently down one engine…and have no oven! We have been cruising along at a slower speed of about 6 knots and sailing when we can. And, I have been using the grill more than often! We will hopefully have these issues resolved soon, but charter season must go on! To be honest, I am not so sure our guests notice that we are trucking along at a slower speed…they are just enjoying the scenery as the should!

As most of you know, when Jon and I started working in the charter industry about 4 years ago, we started as a crew of 2… husband and wife. We were newlyweds, only married for about two months, and we decided that living and working together 24/7 was a great idea! Turns out, we weren’t completely crazy, and we are still in this together…with a few more nice additions! Last year we added 1 crew member to have a crew of 3, and this year we have a crew of 4! Of course, the bigger the boat the more crew needed!

Jon and I are extremely fortunate to have the crew that we have. The charter industry has a reputation for turning crews around often, but we our so pleased with the team that we have on board Blue Gryphon! Now there are 4 us of together 24/7, and we are family. Having a tight knit crew makes being away from home for long periods of time just a tad bit easier 😉

We can’t wait to see all of our loved one’s in August! Thank you for following our journey!

Kait and Jon
