Last Friday, Jon and I hauled out Split Second at Front Street Shipyard in Belfast, Maine. Once the boat is on the hard, it marks the start of our real vacation! I must admit, after living on the water for an extended period of time, it is strange to be on land again. I do miss, waking up every morning to the sounds of the sea… splashing waves, sea-gull screams, boat engines etc. It is almost too quiet where we are currently staying! Jon, the pets and I are currently staying at a quaint little mountain cottage in Lincolnville, Maine. Don’t get me wrong, it is very peaceful, it is just an adjustment after being on the water for a solid year.
Lincolnville is only about 20 minutes from where Split Second is doing her yard period. We are still heading to the boat almost every day to make sure we are still on target to get put back in the water around October 1st. One of the major projects for this yard period is replacing all of the exterior cushions and canvas! Split Second is going to have a fresh new look for the upcoming charter season…stay tuned for updated pictures!
As you can tell, we are struggling with this vacation thing…it is hard to leave the boat for extended periods of time when we are located just down the street! So, to make sure we actually take a vacation, we have decided to set off on a road trip starting on September 7th. Yes, the pets are coming with us! We can’t wait! Here is our road trip schedule…
First stop: New Hampshire to visit family.
Second stop: NYC!!! We will be spending two nights in the big city! Neither of us have spent much time here, so we plan on doing anything and everything!
Third stop: Washington D.C./Fredericksburg (University of Mary Washington). I am so excited to show Jon boy where I went to college! Also, I haven’t been back since 2008 so I am excited to see all the changes that have been made.
Fourth stop: Nashville! This will be a long day of driving, but we both think it will be totally worth it! Neither of us have been, and we absolutely love music, so we are hoping to catch some great tunes!
Once we leave Nashville, we will start working our way back to Maine. We are thinking of going back through up state New York and doing Niagara Falls, but this is not set in stone yet. We will end our road trip in Bar Harbor, Maine where we spend our anniversary every year, which is on September 18th.
Once we have completed our road trip, we will be spending most of our time with friends and family before we set sail again. We are planning on departing sometime in mid-october to head back to the BVI area. This is all weather depending of course, but we will definitely be stopping in Bermuda to break up this lengthy transit.
I can’t believe that it has already been a year since Jon and I were hired to run Split Second. We are so grateful to work in this industry and have truly enjoyed all of our experiences aboard. Thank you to everyone who made our first year on Split Second a successful one! Cheers!
